Long-Tailed Bats A Promising Sign of Restoration Success

Exciting news for the Wakapuaka Mouri project — the nationally critical long-tailed bat (pekapeka-tou-roa) has been detected along the restored banks of the Wakapuaka River, just 15km from Nelson’s CBD.

Thanks to five years of community-led river restoration, this rare species has been recorded frequenting the area near Cable Bay, where the project is reconnecting native forest and river ecosystems. The discovery, confirmed by DOC’s biodiversity team, is a promising sign that native wildlife is returning to the region.
