Stephens Bay

The Stephens Bay Wetland is considered by experts to represent the original vegetation of the region well, with a high proportion of rare species present. This wetland is an ecosystem that is nationally uncommon and retains functional indigenous components.

The project goals are the restoration and protection of the wetland mauri, through removal of pest plants, control of pest species and restoration of the indigenous ecosystem and to connect the Stephens Bay and wider community to this wetland, educating the importance of wetlands by providing easy walking tracks around and into the wetland with information signs.

Weed removal work, mainly pines and willows, has started apace and restoration plans will be enacted with resident-patrolled trap lines and native plantings continuing on the wetland margins.
