Whio in the Parapara River

The Parapara River in Golden Bay is an abundant place, with a chequered past – 100 years ago the lower reaches were scoured to bare earth in the hunt for gold. Fast forward and today native bush is reclaiming the land, and the river is one of the few in the district with a completely forested catchment.

Locals are working together to support the wildlife that has always called this place home, by managing predators and weeds.

Resident birds include Whio, NZ falcon, fernbird, and banded rail, among many others.
