We’re delighted to share some wonderful news—Tasman Environmental Trust has received a $30,000 USD grant from Airbnb’s Community Fund, thanks to the support of the Air BNB Top of the South Host Club members. This generous donation will strengthen our mahi to protect biodiversity and support community conservation across Te Tauihu.
Strengthening Grassroots Action Through the TET Conservation Hub
Airbnb’s donation helps ensure TET’s Conservation Hub can continue to support 28 community-led conservation projects throughout the region. The Hub exists to help community groups succeed – supporting aspirations and action by connecting people, ideas, knowledge, and resources. At the heart of our work is a belief that collective action creates lasting impact, and the Hub’s tailored support empowers communities to focus on what they do best: restoring and protecting our natural environment.

Three Projects, One Shared Vision
Airbnb’s donation supports TET’s strategic focus on connecting communities, protecting and restoring habitats and pest control. Here are three examples of that work in action:
Motueka Catchment Collective – Connecting People and Waterways

What began in 2020 with a few concerned landowners has grown into an inspiring local movement, integrating community aspirations and knowledge to increase our understanding of each other and the Motueka catchment. The project brings diverse communities together through shared learning and actions.
Pest Free Onetahua – Protecting a Sacred Ecological Treasure

Onetahua/Farewell Spit is a globally significant sanctuary for rare and migratory birds. With TET’s support, the Pest Free Onetahua project uses innovative trapping and new technology to eliminate invasive predators, paving the way for the return of taonga species like the tākahe.
Battle for the Banded Rail – A Decade of Habitat Restoration

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, this pioneering project is helping restore the margins of the Waimeha/Waimea Inlet, Aotearoa’s largest enclosed estuary. Volunteers have planted 100,000 natives and installed over 900 predator traps, creating a safe haven for birds like the banded rail and mātata/fernbird.
A Global Partnership for Local Impact
Airbnb’s Community Fund recognises the power of grassroots change. We’re deeply grateful for their support and look forward to working with the Top of the South Air BnB host members to share the fantastic conservation work happening in this place – and to inspire others to be part of this journey.
