Native Tree Corridor Flourishes Next to Highway

Transforming an ugly stretch of land next to a Tasman highway into a native corridor has reached a 35,000-tree milestone thanks to a grassroots community group.

The Te Mamaku Native Corridor project has seen a dedicated group of volunteers, generous funders and contractors work their way along the hills and gullies next to State Highway 60 (Coastal Highway) over the past three years.

Their labour is already bearing fruit with kahikatea, totara and beech trees starting to fill the bare ridges and gullies on the Crown-owned land that had been overrun by gorse, blackberry and wilding pines.
