Nina Fowler who is one of our younger volunteers has been filmed by TVNZ about her involvement with the Battle for the Banded Rail for the children's programme Fanimals in the 'My Big Backyard' section, (Episode 170, 27th March 2019) This is well worth a watch as she is a fantastic ambassador for this project and an inspiration. An elusive wetland bird with distinctive features has been spotted in Mapua for the first time in five years. Since 2014, members of the Battle for the Banded rail project have been working at several sites in the Waimea Inlet to restore the habitat of the estuarine-dwelling native bird.
